Should I learn polish?

I have a lot of polish heritage and the a lot of the people in the generation before my parents can speak it. I feel like i should get in touch with my roots. Do think i should do it? i have indian friends who can speak hindi, an i'm kind of jealous. to polish speakers, is it difficult to learn? please give me as much info about it as you can.

I think i can learn languages pretty well; i have been taking spanish for under 2 years and i know it better than the spanish 4 students...but what about polish?

Should I learn polish?
Yes you should!! Its a lovely language!! But it is pretty hard. The grammar was the toughest part for me. I was born here to two polish parents and polish was the first language I learned but I had to go through many many years of polish schooling to sharpen my grammar and writing skills but overall I am so happy I am fluent in it, it feels wonderful going to Poland over the summer and being able to talk to my grandparents about anything and everything or listening to the radio and understanding music. I even attend a polish church. Its wonderful to know any language really. When I have children I'm going to carry my culture on and teach them Polish too. I also took 5 years of Spanish in High school/Jr. High and now I'm planning on majoring or minoring in it while I'm in college.

So go for it. You won't regret it!!

Do your parents know how to speak it?? If yes, then theres your source. If not, I would begin by getting those books with cds and following those, or even computer programs would help too. Always strat with the basics. Also, listen to polish music whenever you get a chance, its a great help. You'll be picking up words in no time! Not to mention polish music is awesome. If you want a radio station, go to www.rmf.fm/radio and click the yellow triangle button where the windows media player is and you'll be connected to the most listened to polish radio station straight from Poland lol.

Have fun learning!
Reply:You can buy software that will help you learn Polish. Some cities with large Polish populations also have Polish community centers, and they may offer classes.

I grew up in a town with a large Polish population. I learned a little bit of Polish, and to this day, I am still the only non-Pole in my class who could spell everyone's last name!

I say, Tak! (Yes) Go for it. Polish is a rich language, and will open the door to make other slavic languages, like Russian, easier for you in the future.
Reply:go for it.!!!

i am American Indian Living in Miami,Florida.

the community of Miami speak 27 languages on Daily basis.

I speak fluently 5 Eruopean languages.

Reply:sureeee

i noe a lil polish frum my friends..they teach me words and i can tell when they r talkin bout me
Reply:Polish is a hard language to learn, but If you know spanish and are familar to masculine, feminine forms and yo, tu, usted, etc. then it might be a little easier to understand how Polish words are formed. If you are serious i would get a really good Polish book with CD's and just learn letters and how words sound, then read a Polish dictionary.

Powodzenia! (good luck)
Reply:polish is extremely difficult. both of my parents are polish and speak to me mostly in polish. they sent me to saturday polish school at the age of 5 until 8th grade. i can read, write and speak it but i still makes loads of mistakes and have a slight accent.

i do say go for it though. i used to complain every saturday about havin to go to saturday school, but its probably one of the best things they could have done for me. and i wanna do the same wit my kids.
Reply:you could learn it by studying individually with books like other people do, and you should definitely learn it if you have any interest in it. i dont think any language should be any harder to learn than another if you simply put some effort into it.

you might want to consider studying abroad to learn it
Reply:Polish is about as difficult for an English-speaking learner as Russian. It is a Slavic language with a rather complicated grammar.

Once you learn it well, however, you will find it easy to learn other Slavic languages. They are a rather close-knit family of similar languages. The most deviant among them is Bulgarian, the only Slavic language that has a definite article (post-positioned just as in Romanian).

Go Tokyo!!!
Reply:I think it is great that you want to be more in touch with your family roots. I say go for it. I am hispanic roots and wish that I was fluent in spanish. I think it would make my life richer.
Reply:Of course you should. It is also a doorway into the Slavic languages and you can get a job with the CIA if we get back into another Cold War with Russia.
Reply:yeah you should
Reply:It is always good to learn the language of your people and heritage. I find it sad when children of immigrants forget their language and culture. Don't be another assimilated person with no roots. Our diversity is what makes America great. This country was built on the backs of immigrants. It's the least we can do to repay them by making sure their heritage lives on.
Reply:yeah, well, its ALAWAYS good to be in touch with your roots.

but from a guy who lives in miami, to learn spanish would be key to alot of things, for one, it makes you a better candidate for bieng hired. #2 it would be pretty impressive to flirt with a spanish chick in spanish, and youre not spanish!!!!! plus if some old spanish bi+ches were talkin smack about you in spanish, youd be able to know what theyre sayin. learnin spanish is pure beneficial. do it!!!
Reply:You have no reason not to learn. Go to your local library or bookstore and browse the language section. You should be able to get a Polish self-study course. If you put effort into it and set aside regular time for studying, you'll do fine.
Reply:I am in the same situation as you right now. I am Polish and my family can all speak it. I decided to start to learn some more as I already know quite a bit. It is always nice to know another language. What I am doing is a tape and book lesson pack that I bought at Chapters. I think it is mainly a personal decision. It all depends on how much your roots mean to you and what you would like to do with your extra time.
Reply:i don't think u should learn it, it would take up time, and i herd that its very difficult to learn
