can any one help me can you french polish a box which has a wooden veneer on it or is it only possible to french polish a wooden plain box thanks

Yes, you certainly can. I've done it myself. Remember that methylated spirits are involved, so be careful not to do it in a room where there is any naked flame (including pilot lights). It's a messy business for the amateur, so I expect we will see another question from you soon, under "Cleaning and Laundry", enquiring about removal of shellac and linseed oil from yourself, your clothes, and the floor!

Reply:Not a problem. I think most antique boxes are mahogany or walnut veneer. It is worth reading up on how to do it. I have tried several times and got a reasonable result but make sure the veneer is very smooth before you start and finish off with a figure of eight movement to get a high shine.
Reply:Yes, you can french polish veneer. Before you start, make sure that the veneer is well glued. If there's a corner lifting, the polish will get under it and make it worse.
