How do i polish abalone shells?

i went scuba diving in Monterey not too long ago. I found empty abalone shells and took 3 with me (over time). i've seen abalone shells polished in some stores when i went diving in hawaii, and i was curious as to how i would polish a shell on my own. i hope to get at least one polished well so i can give it to someone near and dear to my heart.

well do you know a cheap and inexpensize way??


it's actually very easy

and not costly at all!!


this is what we did..


we got clear nail polish (from any store) sally hanson is the best because its not sticky when it dries.


then, you pour it on a paper plate and get a paint brush,


not the brush it comes with (too small, it will take to long)


paint the whole shell.


Where gloves if you want, you dont have to.


Once it dries


tak it outside


and spray some hairspary along the whole inside, outside, underneath


and there you go!!

Hydrogen Peroxide is what they use to make bones white.
Reply:Real simple way is to rub them with soft scrub,I don't even use a cloth,just my fingers does a nice job.enjoy.
Reply:I'm not sure but I believe these shell vendors soak the shells in a bleach solution. You can try dipping one end of one shell in a 50/50 solution and see the result, I don't think it will disintegrate it and try buffing it when dry. Good Luck !

Reply:Yes, to clean - - boil. But, in white vinegar, water, %26amp; salt. Use tongs to remove %26amp; use stiff brush. Repeat on stubborn ocean hardened sediments.





Abalone has a natural shine hidden until 'polished/buffed'; this I have not tried but understood that a basic buffing compound for a car finish would work to bring out the shine.
