How to polish Plastic Headlight Lenses - what to use?

My car has plastic headlight lenses. They are older and "foggy". I have heard that rather than replacing them (they are expensive), I can take them apart and polish them clear again, resulting in better lighting at night. What should I use to do this? Would a standard car polishing compund be best?

Parts stores sell products to clean them like Flitz ball, Meguiar's has a plastic polish and cleaner for this or try these:

Reply:before you spend any money, go to your bathroom and try some toothpaste, with a soft cloth,if that makes it better then one of those other polishes will probably work. Report It

Reply:Only a desperate indigent would use toothpaste on his headlights. Use a professional deoxidizer.

Reply:You can now get a lens polishing kit at an auto store, like auto zone.

The fogginess of your car's lens is actually a clear coat that is applied to the plastic, to retard the UV rays from damaging the plastic. Once that clear coat is burnt from the solar rays, it becomes foggy.

Polishing your lenses will remove this old coat and you will need to apply a new coat. The kits available have all the materials you need to fix it. It will not be as good as nes, but the improvement will be noticeable. You do not have to remove your lights.
Reply:Auto part stores sell some stuff called Lens Renew that will get the foggy/yellowness off and make them clear again....hope this helps!
Reply:I've used a polishing wheel on a rotary tool in conjunction with tooth paste, polishing compound or rubbing compound. You can also get polishing wheels for drills and grinders.

Start out with a course abrasive and finish with a very fine abrasive.

It would be hard to make it worse than they are now if their anything like mine get in Florida.
