How to polish a wooden table top ?

I have a nice looking wooden table which has all kinds of ink spots as well as lost finishing on top. I would like to remove those spots and polish the table. I am not looking for a paint which changes the whole color of the table. Rather I am looking for a polish which enhances the wood itself and looks similar to the legs (shiny). Not sure what I need to buy and use on it. Please help.

Sounds like you should sand the top down and redo it with a gloss varathane if the legs are shiny.
Reply:use mr.sheen and a yellow cloth with red stitching (: very good BUT dont get on laminate flooring or you'll be falling all over the place.
Reply:You would need to sand the top down and refinish it with polyurethane or some other sealer.
Reply:Murphy Soap Oil works well to polish and bring back wood.
Reply:Ink spots will need to be removed with mineral spirits or some other solvent of the specific ink you have. You will also want to do a general cleaning and perhaps abrade the surface as part of preparation.

Polish means different things between UK and US, so I'm assuming you mean UK polish = US finish.

Polyurethane, while highly abrasion resistant, is not the best choice for top coating as it has adhesion issues. If the finish is the original factory finish and it's less than 100 years old, is probably lacquer. You can buy a brushing lacquer and add a few new coats.

If you have ever used a silicone containing formulation (e.g., Pledge), you will probably have fish-eye problems. The best solution for this is to first spray on a couple of very light coats of shellac (aerosol cans available) to seal in the silicone oil and be a barrier coat.
